Description
Urzites â telepathic animals of many species found âoriginally only on the southern island of Urz. â
Receptives - humans who are able to hear the âUrzites. Only about one person in eighty or ninety is a âReceptive. Most Receptives can only hear the animal âwho has chosen to be their partner, although there have âbeen recorded instances of very rare people, âSuperReceptives, who can hear more than one Urzite. â
The Warden Corps â a government-sanctioned force âwithin which the Receptive-Urzite pairs function. The âWardens and their Urzite partners are mostly used as âespionage agents and scouts in the ongoing war with the âneighbouring nation of Zeranda, although some are also âinvolved in search and rescue and also in recruitment and âthe finding of new Receptives.â
The next Urzite stepped forward. And the next. And âthe next. I tell you, it doesnât sound all that hard, just âstanding there repeating that spell, but it was exhausting âwork. Urzite followed Urzite followed Urzite, small âones, big ones, young ones, old ones; cats, dogs, horses, âdonkeys, birds, rats, lizards, monkeys. â
I stopped noticing them after a while. They just âbecame a blur. I do remember that I did Umbis, though, âand Sanpo, who was quite absurdly grateful, and, of all âUrzites, Madame Urittaâs Chym. I couldnât help but âwonder what sheâd think of all this.â
By the time lunchtime was over I was so exhausted I âwas about ready to fall off my wall and it was getting âreally difficult to get the words of the spell in the right âplaces. However, I must have taught at least fifty Urzites âto read, possibly twice that many. The crowd in the âcourtyard had thinned to just the last few hopefuls and âquite a number whoâd stayed as spectators, and as I âlooked about I saw all the remaining candidates step up âto one of the other spell-casters. â
Amazingly, everyone who had turned up had been âprocessed. I was quite proud of us, really. That was a âvery good dayâs work. I hopped down from my wall and âmade my weary way over to where Naya stood talking âto Garina and Annana. Stumpy and Syana were already âthere, and as I approached, Hoo swept in and took up âher usual place on Stumpyâs head. â
At first, I couldnât see Mewla, but then Naya moved âand I spotted her in her accustomed place in her arms. It âseemed we were all here. Oh, hang on, where was âThimni? Even as I looked around, there was a clatter of âhooves on cobbles and Thimni came bounding up, âlooking disgustingly energetic. How could she possibly âgallop like that when I felt about as limp as a wrung-out ârag?â
ââThat was fun, wasnât it?â she said as she skidded to âa halt next to me. âItâs going to change things around âhere now that every Urzite can read. I intend to ârecommend that the first thing they all read is the Articles âof Incorporation. I read them last night, and theyâre quite âan eye-opener. Thereâll be no excuse for denying Urzites âtheir rights now.ââ
I rolled my eyes at Syana, who grinned. Trust Thimni âto make this an intellectual exercise. I swear, that goat is âthe most intelligent person I know, and that includes all âthe humans.â
In âNayaâ, Naya related how she became a Warden. âNow, join Slink the fox; a bit of a rascal, somewhat âgreedy, rather highly-strung, and locked in an ongoing âbattle with Mewla the cat, as he takes up the tale and âtells the next part of the story in his own words, as the âteam begin their training and settle into life as Assigned âUrzites.
